Mid Week Updates: Term Three - Week One
Kia Ora Koutu,
We have been up to a lot this week already. Our students are busy little learners from the second they walk into Kākano. Play provocations are set up for the children from 8:30am - 9:00am and it is an important time for children to be involved in learning through play.
Students need to be involved in this during this time. Teachers will be marking their rolls at 8:45am and if your child arrives after that time they will need to go to the office to sign in.
Changes in our space and learning:
On Monday our children got to explore our new learning and play spaces. Kākano 7 and 5 had a change around and we now get to mix and mingle with the Year 2 students as well.
By moving our classes around we have been able to make room for a really cool handmade kitchen for the children to play with. They have been loving cooking in the kitchen, using all the different play ingredients, washing the dishes and setting up the dinner table.
If you happen to have cleaned out your kitchen in the holiday or have a spring clean scheduled in and have some cutlery, cups, plates, bowls, pots and pans please feel free to bring them in and we can add them to our kitchen.
Life Education
On Monday afternoon Kākano 7 and 8 braved it out into the rain and wind to meet our new friends Harold and Katie who are teaching us about our bodies and how to keep ourselves safe by making the right choices and not keeping bad secrets.
Here is a little bit about what we learnt on Monday with Harold the Giraffe and Katie:
We will also be running a Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme later in the term alongside the New Zealand Police which will link in well to what we are learning with Katie and Harold.
Please see below:
Kia Ora Koutou,
I would like to acknowledge St Mary’s School for their ongoing commitment to delivering the Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS) Programme. KOS is a personal safety programme that teaches students virtual interpersonal skills in different situations. You can find out more about the programme at: https://www.police.govt.nz/advice-services/personal-community-safety/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/kos
The programme will be delivered by classroom teachers from the 23rd of August. There will be a community hui at St Mary's School on Monday 9th August, 5.15pm - 6pm, in Room 14, where I will explain what the programme entails, and share some tips about keeping your young ones safe. You are encouraged to attend.
Please take time to speak with your children about what they are learning in the programme. It will also give you an opportunity to reinforce your family’s values and expectations.
If you have any questions please contact me: Vivienne.Sutto@police.govt.nz
